Which Cambridge colleges are best for biology?

At Cambridge, teaching is largely independent of your college; all students in a given subject will attend the same lectures, seminars, and/or practical classes. As a result, no matter which college you go to, you should get the same good education.

In practice, this isn’t always the case, as supervisions are typically organised by colleges. Supervisors’ teaching abilities, how far they push you, how much work they assign, and what they expect of you as a student can all vary. I’ve had situations where I knew my module supervisor was significantly better or worse than that of friends from different colleges, but even within a college, this can vary. As a first-year biologist, for example, you must study maths, and in my college, there were two supervisors for this maths module who provided supervision of varying quality.

Another factor to consider is the department’s proximity to your college! Many people I know at Cambridge, including myself, considered how far they would have to walk to lectures, labs, and other campus activities when deciding which college to apply to. Downing, Queens, and Pembroke College are all within walking distance of the biology teaching sites, which are primarily located on Downing and Tennis Court Road. Distance can have a big impact on how you think about your college in comparison to others when it comes to studying your subject.

It’s impossible to predict how different colleges’ biology teaching quality will differ, but the differences tend to balance out and should be minor to begin with. Choose your college based on how much you want to live there, how well the community will suit you (if you have the opportunity to visit colleges before applying), and even how pretty it is!
